Ingredients
For the Dough
- 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour or bread flour
- 1 cup (240ml) warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
- 2¼ teaspoons (1 packet) instant yeast
- ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup (60g) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 tablespoons milk powder (optional, for extra softness)
For the Egg Wash
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
Optional Topping
- Melted butter
- Flaky sea salt
- Sesame seeds or poppy seeds
Instructions
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
Combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy if using active dry yeast. If using instant yeast, you can mix it directly with the flour.
Step 2: Make the Dough
Add the flour, salt, egg, and milk powder (if using). Mix until a rough dough forms. Add the softened butter and knead for 10–12 minutes until the dough becomes smooth, soft, and elastic.
Step 3: First Rise
Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
Step 4: Shape the Rolls
Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide it into 6 equal portions and shape each into a smooth ball by pulling the edges underneath.
Arrange the dough balls in a lightly greased baking dish, leaving just enough space for them to rise together and create those beautiful pull-apart sides.
Step 5: Second Rise
Cover loosely and allow the rolls to rise again for 45–60 minutes until puffy and nearly doubled in size.
Step 6: Score and Glaze
Lightly score the tops with a sharp knife or bread lame if desired. Brush generously with the egg wash for a glossy golden finish.
Step 7: Bake
Bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for 22–28 minutes, or until the tops are a rich golden brown and the internal temperature reaches about 190°F (88°C).
Step 8: Finish
Remove from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter for extra softness and shine. Let cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Tips for Extra-Fluffy Rolls
- Use bread flour for a chewier, bakery-style texture.
- Don’t add too much flour—the dough should be soft and slightly tacky.
- Allow both rises to complete fully for maximum volume.
- Brushing with butter immediately after baking keeps the crust soft and flavorful.
